Job Description:

The intern will be working on our court outcomes project, matching subpoenas to court testimony and reporting on criminal and civil outcomes. The intern will be updating current files and managing additional subpoenas that arrive during the internship period. The intern will also work with the social work and prevention teams to provide a brief analysis of the data to identify any trends in the data. If interested, the intern may also work directly with the prevention team in their community trainings. There is no travel required but it does require in-office presence due to the sensitive nature of the work.

Qualities:

Law students would assist in ongoing legal research and case law projects, including organizing our multiple resources for children and families. They would have the opportunity to go to court, and if they are an eligible 3rd year, they would have the opportunity to handle sample hearings.

Cobb County Juvenile Court

Job Description:

Intern will work with judges on policy, orders, research, legal analysis, and special projects. They will also have an opportunity to go to other counties to observe court and connect with various legal offices in the Atlanta area. Interns will also have an opportunity to shadow other attorneys, including SAAGs, Child Advocate Attorneys, GALs, Family Law Attorneys, criminal law attorneys, parent attorneys and delinquency attorneys, and attend hearings, meetings, depositions, mediations, etc. Intern will have some remote opportunities, flexible schedule.

Become knowledgeable about child abuse and neglect-statistics, contributing factors, prevention, and intervention resources.  Support Advocacy Coordinators and Education Advocacy Coordinator by attending court hearing, panel reviews, home visits and other meetings as well as documenting in case files and our database.  Support CASA and Education Advocate volunteers by communicating issues related to their cases.  Assisting with answering emails and returning voicemail. Attend virtual Volunteer Training sessions and continuing education trainings.  Provide support at DeKalb CASA events-Volunteer Information Sessions, Volunteer Training Sessions, In-Service Trainings, etc.

Ability to maintain confidentiality.

Interns will work primarily remotely, though some meetings/hearings are held in person. All new volunteer information/orientation sessions, volunteer training, and in-services (hosted by DeKalb County CASA Program) are held virtually. Training will be provided regarding our database.

The intern will be able to participate in legal research regarding child welfare issues and other areas surrounding child welfare. The intern may also have the opportunity to assist in data collection, identifying and tracking children and youth in care with complex needs, and learn about benefits for children and youth for complex needs. There may be opportunities to assist in record production for litigation and open records requests.

Qualities:

The intern should be comfortable with legal research and writing. Intern should be proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel. There are no limits regarding class position, but the applicant should have completed at least a basic course in legal research and writing.

Other:

The intern will work primarily with the Deputy General Counsel for the Division of Family and Children Services. This position requires discretion and an understanding of the sensitive issues and information surrounding child welfare cases. The intern must understand and agree to keep all information learned in this position confidential. This position can require exposure to information regarding traumatic situations. Job Description:

Intern will directly assist Child Attorneys in preparing for all stages of litigation and follow-up on behalf of children who are the subject of dependency proceedings brought by the Georgia Department of Family and Children Services (DFCS) or by private individuals. Interns will work on both new and on-going cases at various stages, from the probable cause hearings to post-termination and parental rights reviews.

Interns can expect to begin with basic projects and assignments, gradually adding more specialized and complicated assignments as they gain experience. Interns who have met the requirements of Georgia's student practice rule will be assigned a small caseload and make court appearances under the supervision of a Child Attorney.

The duties and responsibilities of the Interns will include:

(1)       interviewing clients, parents, case managers and other persons with relevant case information;

(2)       assisting with the drafting of pleadings, motions, appeal briefs and other trial and post trial preparatory documents;

(3)       initiating and following up on investigation requests;

(4)       reviewing case files, Citizen Panel reports, CASA reports, medical records and other relevant documents and summarizing pertinent information from said documents;

(5)       conducting legal research and keeping up with the latest case law applicable to dependency issues;

(6)       locating and recommending appropriate support services to children and their families;

(7)       performing child placement visits;

(8)       attending specialized meetings and reviews including, but not limited to, Child Fatality Review, Child Abuse Intervention Team (CAIT), Family Treatment Court, Panel Reviews and School Staffing;

(9)       assisting administrative staff with pre-court file preparation and management including, but not limited to inputting case and hearing information into the Office's case management reporting system (JCATS); and

(10)     observing and documenting dependency proceedings at Fulton County Juvenile Court.

Job Description:

Applicant will have an opportunity to observe and assist with hearings, interviews, drafting, and research pertaining to child advocacy, as a best interest advocate and client directed advocate. If eligible, the applicant may have the opportunity to exercise the student practice rule. Cases involve primarily dependency cases with DFCS, but applicant may also have an opportunity to work with private dependency cases, adoptions, custody, and guardianships.

Qualities:

Applicant should be a rising 2L or 3L with strong writing and research skills. An open mind and eagerness to learn would be a benefit as well.

The majority of the attorneys in the office are child welfare law specialists. Gwinnett County Child Advocacy and Juvenile Services is located in the Juvenile Court building in downtown Lawrenceville, approximately 30 minutes from downtown Atlanta.

Job Description:

The law student will attend court, draft orders, audit files, assist the Juvenile Court Judges with research and reviewing court related documents as it relates to delinquency matters, child abuse and neglect issues. Transportation is not required. All court related job duties will occur within the Hall County Juvenile Courthouse Annex.

Qualities:

Applicant must be in their 2nd year of law school, knowledge of Microsoft Office, compiling data into charts and graphs, knowledge of how to conduct legal research (preferably on Westlaw), experience in legal writing, some experience working with casefiles, experience taking notes in a fast pace environment, enjoy working within a judicial team environment, and comfortable listening to severe child abuse and neglect cases.

The Hall County Juvenile Court is located 45 minutes from the metro Atlanta area. Public transportation from the metro Atlanta area unfortunately does not extend out to the Hall County area. Legal Screening: Assist with screening unaccompanied minor children, including liaising with referring legal service providers, scheduling and communicating with the child client and adult sponsor, drafting the post-intake case summary, and presenting the case summary to KIND staff to assess for legal relief.

Preparation of Filings: Help draft and edit filings for clients represented in house by KIND staff, including asylum applications, Special Immigrant Juvenile Status petitions, and state court filings. Case Management: Update case summaries, track important court dates and deadlines, process referrals, and communicate with clients.

Research: Research country conditions and psycho-social services to support case work and clients.

Community Outreach: Assist with community outreach initiatives such as Know Your Rights presentations and resource fairs.

Programmatic Support: Complete special projects for KIND attorneys and staff, as needed.

Meetings: Attend weekly virtual staff meetings, legal trainings, and presentations, if available.

Translation and Interpretation: If fluent in Spanish, assist with phone calls to clients, interpreting for client meetings, and translating documents.

Qualities:

Currently enrolled in an accredited Juris Doctor or LLM program. Professional fluency in Spanish preferred, though not required. Experience and interest in working with children, immigrant communities and/or victims of trauma preferred. Strong writing skills and attention to detail. Ability to work within a remote office environment and have regular interaction via telephone, videoconference, IM, and email with KIND's team.
